"The mission of Contemporary A Cappella is to promote the growth, development, and awareness of a cappella music and techniques in the UCF and Orlando community through performances, outreach, and entertainment." - CAC Mission Statement
Formed in 2004, Contemporary A Cappella serves as the umbrella organization overseeing the a cappella groups at the University of Central Florida, providing support, contact information, and administrative direction. Members of the executive board include the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Sergeant at Arms, Treasurer, and Music Directors, who act as represenatives on behalf of their groups. Other members of the administrative panel include the Travel Director, Marketing Director, and Social Chair.
Contemporary A Cappella currently oversees four a cappella groups on campus: the all-male "Crescendudes," formed in 2005, the all-female "So Noted" formed in 2008, the all-female group "KeyHarmony" formed in 2009, and the mixed group "Gemini Blvd" also formed in 2009.
Each a cappella group is headed by a Music Director (MD) and Assistant Director (AD) or two Co-Directors (CD). The music director is the primary authority within the group, responsible for both social management and musical oversight. The structural organization of each group and subsequent positions is left to the discretion of the music director(s). These positions may be either elected or appointed, and are created as necessary. This is deliberately done to best accommodate the needs of each group and give it the flexibility to run as needed. The assistant director is a secondary role of authority, appointed by the elected music director, whose purpose is to assist and advise the music director and to take over responsibilities when the music director is absent. Music directors may elevate assistant directors to co-director status, in which case the two positions share equal power.
Elections for all executive and administrative positions occur annually towards the end of the Spring semester, with the exception of the assistant music director, who is appointed by the elected music director. Elections within groups occur based on the governing structure present within the group.
